How to take the perfect picture for your custom portrait
When I paint, I work directly from your photo. The clearer and more detailed the image, the more lifelike and accurate your portrait will be. Here are some simple tips to get the best result:
1. Get to Eye Level
Try to take the photo at the subject’s eye level instead of looking down or up.
This gives a natural perspective and captures true proportions.
2. Good Lighting Matters
Natural daylight is ideal – bright but not harsh (for example, near a window or outdoors in shade).
Avoid strong shadows, dim rooms, or backlighting that makes the subject appear too dark.
3. Focus on the Eyes
Sharp, clear eyes make a portrait come alive.
Tap the screen (on phones) to focus before you take the shot.
4. Fill the Frame
Make sure your subject takes up most of the picture.
If you want a head-and-shoulders portrait, get close enough for detail without cropping important features like ears, horns, or whiskers.
5. Keep Colours True
Avoid tinted lighting or camera filters, which can change natural colours.
Daylight will help me match coats, feathers, or scales accurately.
6. Keep it Still
Take several quick shots to reduce blur, especially if your subject moves around.
Patience (and sometimes treats or toys) can help with timing.
7. Show Personality
The best portraits capture character – whether that’s a playful stance, a relaxed pose, or a unique expression
.
8. Originals, Please
Send unedited, high-quality images if possible. Filters and heavy edits blur important details.
9. Send a Selection
A few options are always helpful. I’ll choose the one that works best for composition and detail.
